Happy holidays everyone, and welcome to our official Meta Quest 2 gaming gift guide for 2022.
Maybe you’re thinking about giving a loved one their own Meta Quest 2 this year—or have one hidden in a closet right now. Maybe you surprised a loved one with Meta Quest 2 last December, and now you want to tuck some new VR games or experiences into their (digital) gift pile. Or hey, maybe you just want to buy some for yourself. (Go ahead, you deserve it.)
Whatever your situation, we’ve got plenty of recommendations for the people you hold dear. Below, we’ve rounded up some of 2022’s most exciting hits, from the heroic exploits of Marvel’s Iron Man VR to NFL PRO ERA’s simulation pigskin-tossing, Moss: Book II’s mouse-sized adventure to the dead-infested streets of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution—and many, many more. We’ve also included a few evergreen favorites like Beat Saber and Walkabout Mini Golf for people who are just starting to build their VR collection (and our Meta Quest 2 Starter Kit has even more recommendations).
Even Super Heroes can’t always outrun the past. That’s a reality Tony Stark is forced to confront in Marvel’s Iron Man VR when his former life as an arms dealer comes back to haunt him. The very weapons he designed will be turned against him by Ghost, forcing Stark to decide whether saving himself is worth betraying everything he’s come to believe in. Step into Tony Stark’s iconic armor and master Iron Man’s unique flight and fighting capabilities as you confront Ghost’s army over Stark Mansion, in Shanghai, and around the world. We’ve been fans of Marvel’s Iron Man VR since its original release, and we’re excited that the talented teams at Camouflaj and Endeavor One—along with our partners at Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment—could bring this incredible superhero experience to Meta Quest 2 as well.
Emergency meeting! There’s a killer aboard this spaceship. Is it you? Too bad, you doth protest too much. Out the airlock you go. Among Us VR reimagines the hit game of deception from a new first-person perspective. Explore the stars with your Crewmates—but beware, at least one of them is an Impostor intent on killing off everyone else. Online matches support 4 - 10 VR players ages 13+, so gather some friends, choose your favorite hat (grab the new hat packs for even more options), and get ready to learn which ones are a little too good at lying.
Beat Saber kept the hits coming this year with new Music Packs from The Weeknd, Lizzo, and Fall Out Boy, plus the high energy Electronic Mixtape. But 2022’s biggest changes landed alongside the free OST5 (our fifth original soundtrack) update in March. In addition to six new songs, the OST5 update added Arc and Chain Notes, two twists on Beat Saber’s block-slashing mechanics that guide you through specific moves or require you to chop a series of blocks to maintain your streak. As Beat Games Lead Level Creator Josh “Freeek” Joynes explained at the time, Arc Notes allows the team to mimic sustained guitar notes and such, while Chain Notes can be used to better represent sequential sounds, like quick drum hits. It’s the first time the core Beat Saber gameplay has changed since launch, giving longtime players something new to master.
Blue 80! Blue 80! Hut, hut, hike! NFL PRO ERA is the first fully licensed NFL VR sim. Lace up your (virtual) cleats and experience what it’s like to be QB1 for your favorite NFL team. Step onto the field, hear the crowd roar, and drop perfectly placed passes even as the defensive line rushes in for the sack. Do you have what it takes to lead your team to the Super Bowl? Developed by StatusPRO, Inc., NFL PRO ERA is the Future of the Field, getting fans closer to the gridiron than ever before. No more Monday Morning Quarterbacking—get in there and flex your skills!
Polyarc’s Moss introduced us to Quill, a small (but determined) hero who set off to find her uncle and found herself swept up in a huge and perilous adventure. The kind of adventure that eventually topples kingdoms. Moss: Book II continues Quill’s story as she attempts to overthrow the ruthless Arcane and find peace, not just for herself but for the entire realm. But she’ll need a friend—to watch her back and keep her safe, to provide guidance when she’s lost, and to help solve the many puzzles that stand in her way. Are you that friend, dear Reader? Help Quill save the world and become the legend she’s meant to become.
If you haven’t played the original Red Matter, you should. Set in an alternate dimension where the space race never ended, the original Red Matter captivated players by sending them to one of Saturn’s moons to investigate an abandoned research station, solve Myst-style puzzles, and discover the secrets hidden deep within. Vertical Robot’s acclaimed follow-up Red Matter 2 picks up in the aftermath of the original’s cliffhanger ending and expands on it with a story that spans the entire solar system. Circle ever closer to the heart of a hidden conspiracy and uncover the origins of the titular red matter itself, all while playing one of 2022’s most visually and technologically impressive VR games.
A brand new Welcome Island experience with practice holes, a driving range, and raft ride. Six new courses—each with easy and hard modes. Over 100 new lost balls and half dozen collectible putters. Plus an original soundtrack release and merch store. This has been a huge year for Walkabout Mini Golf. Arguably the biggest year, with the debut of courses based on Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and Cyan’s Myst interspersed among Mighty Coconut’s originals. Can the momentum continue? Signs point to yes, with Mighty Coconut kicking off a Jules Verne-themed trilogy in September with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and two more Verne courses coming in 2023, along with more Lost Cities and entirely new packs. But why wait? Walkabout Mini Golf is already excellent, whether you’re getting in some after-work solo practice or catching up with friends and family with a side helping of casual competition.
“Gonna take nothin’ short of a miracle to survive what’s coming.” Sure, you made it through The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (relatively) unscathed, but will your return trip to New Orleans be as successful? Skydance Interactive’s sequel sends you back to a city still reeling from your choices last time out. Scavenge, sneak, and fight your way through new areas, including the iconic French Quarter. The stakes are higher, resources scarcer, and the unstoppable Axeman stalks your every step. You might even need to explore after dark, when the Walkers are most active… It’ll take grit, creativity, and yes, maybe a miracle to survive both the dead and the living in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution. Best of luck, Tourist.
Stress Level Zero’s 2019 project BONEWORKS set the bar for immersive VR gaming, wowing players with realistic physics interactions and unprecedented attention to detail. The studio’s new release, BONELAB, brings those same ideas to Meta Quest 2 (and Pro) for the first time. Escaping your own execution, you flee into a hidden research facility deep underground—but your problems are far from over. Prepare for a gauntlet of challenges, from combat arenas to obstacle courses to user-generated levels. All of this is of course built on top of Stress Level Zero’s next-generation interaction engine, which makes sure every weapon and object in the game behaves as it would in the physical world, whether you’re using a board to bludgeon enemies or help scale a wall. And with both a passionate community and official mod support, expect BONELAB to keep evolving for a while to come.
This year, commit to you with Supernatural—the acclaimed VR workout experience known for its heart-pumping signature Flow classes, boxing sessions, guided meditations, and more, all led by expert instructors and set to a variety of music you know and love. Each session lets you escape to stunning destinations around the world, so you can work up a sweat amid Icelandic glaciers or the ruins of Machu Picchu, all from the comfort of home. The $18.99 USD/month or $179.99 USD/year subscription gets you new classes daily, each ranging in difficulty so you can find your perfect fit. In 2022, Supernatural cranked up the heat by adding knee strikes to its repertoire, torching the core while providing a full body workout. Looking to exercise in VR on a regular basis? You might want to check out the new Meta Quest 2 Active Pack as well.
It’s hard not to smile while playing Tentacular. This physics-based puzzle game has you playing as a giant squid—complete with two wobbly tentacles—who’s just trying to help out the people in his adoptive hometown. Some of the townspeople will ask you to put away heavy objects or build massive structures, while others will want you to fling rockets into the sky or experiment with other strange technology. The jobs keep getting funnier and more ridiculous the further you progress, but underneath it all is a surprisingly charming story about finding one’s place in the world.
“You meet in a (virtual) tavern.” Coming out of 2021, Demeo had already won over tabletop gamers with its blend of board games and Dungeons & Dragons-esque roleplaying. This year saw the game expand even more, sending our heroes into the desert for the fourth campaign, Curse of the Serpent Lord. Resolution Games also leaned into the you-and-your-friends-around-a-table trappings for Heroes’ Hangout, introducing a social space dressed up as a basement refuge, complete with arcade games, a place to paint miniatures, an archery minigame, and more. It’s a tabletop lover’s dream space—though if you’d prefer something more familiar, you can also turn on Passthrough and play in your own living room. There’s more to come, with teases for a fifth adventure coming over the holidays, as well as hand tracking support in 2023.
This cozy little city creator from developer Purple Yonder and publisher nDreams is all about making building fun and accessible. Sneak in undetected or go in guns blazing? Both are viable in Espire 2. Picking up years after the events of Espire 1: VR Operative, Digital Lode’s new sequel Espire 2 plunges players back into the world of international espionage. With the terrorist group OPHIS plotting world domination, it falls to you and your cutting-edge Espire Frames to stop them. Take control of Sinder, a resilient robot designed for stopping power, or Sooty, a three-foot tall frame designed for stealth and squeezing through tight spaces. Your choice fundamentally changes how Espire 2 plays—though you can also team up with a friend in Espire 2’s co-op campaign (which has a unique story and missions) and see how the two Espire Frames work together. Best of luck saving the world (again), agent.
Imagine yourself in a DJ booth, the radio station’s skeptical producer and a vaguely British woman’s voice in your head to guide you. So begins AREA MAN LIVES, a narrative-driven VR game where you can have unscripted conversations with the characters in an unfolding radio drama. While you’ll use your hands—er, monkey paws—to interact with the world around you, far more interesting is the game’s use of voice interactions, from recording ad spots to conversing with callers. Can you save the area man from himself—and the 98 possible ways he can meet his demise? Will you beat Rick’s darts score? And what in the world is up with the raccoons? Answer these questions and more in this indie darling from the makers of That Dragon, Cancer.
Resident Evil 4 launched on Meta Quest 2 last year, putting players into the shoes of Leon S. Kennedy for a brand new, ultra-immersive take on Capcom’s survival horror classic. But what to do after you’ve battled your way through all those Ganados and saved the president’s daughter? This year Armature Studio added The Mercenaries, the iconic score attack mode. Fight off waves of enemies, survive as long as possible, and score big as you attempt to top the leaderboards and unlock extra goodies, including Big Head Mode, a black-and-white Classic Horror Mode, and more.
Those of us of a certain age remember a time when anime wasn’t so easy to come by and we only had fuzzy CRT televisions to watch it on. <RUNNER> is a lovingly made tribute to that era and to influential sci-fi anime like Akira. Set in a cyberpunk future, this arcade shooter has you speeding through endless highways with your trusty motorcycle while fighting against an army of robotic enemies. A variety of deadly power-ups can enhance your twin pistols and vehicle-mounted cannons, and if you’re ever in a pinch, you can use R.U.S.H. mode to slow down time and focus your attacks on enemy weak points. <RUNNER> is a challenging game, but it’s one you’ll keep coming back to thanks to its nostalgic presentation and over-the-top action.
