The holidays are right around the corner, but we’ve got one last Meta Quest software update to gift-wrap and deliver before our long winter’s nap.

The v47 update is the first since the launch of Meta Quest Pro last month, and we’re introducing a few features that take advantage of the headset’s new capabilities, including mixed reality capture. We’re also getting into the gift giving spirit with the ability to share your Wishlist, making a few improvements to the Meta Quest mobile app, and making it easier to change your avatar on Meta Quest 2 and Pro.

A lot of details to get to, so let’s dig in!

Meta Quest Pro

Let’s kick things off with a bundle of updates exclusive to our new Meta Quest Pro headset.

Background Audio Playback: First, a much-requested feature for all you multi-taskers and music lovers: Background Audio Playback. If you’re the type of person who likes to work with music on, or want to decompress to a podcast while playing a solo round of Walkabout Mini Golf, you’ll now be able to do so on Meta Quest Pro. Find the feature on the Experimental Features panel in your Settings.

The easiest way to test it out is to load up your favorite streaming service in the Browser and jump into your favorite game, but the feature supports background audio from any 2D panel app in any VR experience.

Mixed Reality Capture: Meta Quest’s capture tools let you show off the cool moments you have in the headset, and on Meta Quest Pro a lot of the coolest moments involve mixed reality. With v47 you can now record and show off those mixed reality moments, whether that’s some late-night beat matching in Tribe XR or a bit of living room espionage in I Expect You To Die: Home Sweet Home.

Previously, trying to use capture with Passthrough enabled would’ve set any in-game action against a black background, but now you’ll be able to show off exactly what you see in your Meta Quest Pro. Just hit the button in-app to pull up the Quick Action Bar, navigate to Camera, and tap “Record Video” to start capturing.

Bonus points if you make your space look cozy before showing off your new Painting VR masterpiece.

Shareable Wishlists

Are there a few VR games you’re hoping to (metaphorically) unwrap this year? Make it easy on the gift givers in your life by making your Wishlist public!

It’s easy—just go to the Wishlist tab on the Meta Quest Store, update your wishlist to Public, and then you’ll be able to create a link and send your Wishlist to others. The loved ones in your life can even send you gifts directly from your wishlist. No need to keep finding ways to work Moss: Book II into your discussions about gardening, or dropping hints about the one-person town of Monowi, Nebraska.

Haven’t added any apps to your wishlist yet? Check out our Meta Quest Starter Kit for some inspiration, and then look for the “Heart” icon when browsing the Meta Quest Store in-headset or the “Add to Wishlist” button elsewhere.

Or you can always go the spur-of-the-moment route and ask for a Meta Quest digital gift card. They come ready-to-use in prepaid balances of $15, $25 and $50 USD and can be sent with a personalized message.

Meta Quest Mobile App

We’re doing a bit of winter cleaning in the Meta Quest mobile app. We’re bringing your VR friends front and center, so it’s simple to see when they’re online, what they’re up to, send them a message, or start playing together.

We’re also adding a widget to the home screen that will show your headset and controller battery life, and make it easier than ever to start Casting, access and launch apps, and use important device settings.

Avatar Mirror in Horizon Home

The v47 update makes it easier than ever to switch up your avatar’s look—whether that’s a change of clothes, a haircut, an experimental mustache, or a brand new face. We’re putting a mirror in your Horizon Home environment on Meta Quest 2 and Pro that will enable you to quickly check how you look, and then make changes to your avatar in real-time.

Throw on a cozy sweater before meeting up in Horizon Worlds, or get your adventuring clothes on before touring Wooorld—or get silly with it and put on a suit and tie before hopping into LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT. The whole point is that it’s easier to show up however you’d like, whenever you’d like.

There’s more in v47, including a redesigned Library and new ways to filter and search through your games. Check out the v47 Release Notes if you want all the nitty gritty details. Otherwise, we’ll see you back here in 2023 for another year of software updates!
